"I believe therapy is a space for people to be witnessed, understood, and gently challenged to take action on what they value most. I use a collaborative, strengths-based approach to help my clients identify the resilience and knowledge that has already been working for them, as well as to target areas where they’ve been struggling. I have specialized training in supporting those with histories of sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, combat exposure, substance use, grief and loss, and identity related stress. To do this, I use evidence-based practices, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and feminist and multicultural understandings of healing, particularly as someone who values giving voice to those who have experienced marginalization. This often looks like using empathy, humor, psychoeducation, and feedback to empower clients to move toward their goals."
Dr. Sauber obtained her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. She then completed her APA-accredited internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, with a focus on the treatment of trauma and substance use disorders. She has formal training in several evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Sauber teaches and does research on the intersections of trauma, grief and loss, and identity. She is especially passionate about integrating social justice and advocacy across all of her roles as a psychologist.
