Dr. Schulz-Heik completed his doctoral training in clinical psychology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he won the Dozer award for most outstanding scholarship in the department of Psychology and Neuroscience. He also received a NIH fellowship to complete interdisciplinary training in behavioral genetics. He completed his predoctoral internship at Palo Alto VA Medical Center in the generalist adult track and a clinical postdoctoral fellowship at the Palo Alto VA Medical Center with an emphasis in trauma recovery. He has served as a clinical researcher at Stanford University’s Depression Research Clinic, evaluating treatments for insomnia, depression, and suicide prevention and at the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center at the Palo Alto VA, evaluating the recovery of veterans with brain injuries. He has also conducted research on the treatment of social anxiety, substance abuse, and high-risk sexual behaviors. He has taught courses at the University of Colorado at Boulder and at San Jose State University. He provides psychotherapy to adults and couples that is rooted in a compassionate relationship and informed by clinical research. He conducts Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and various cognitive-behavioral therapies. These treatments balance acceptance and change and help clients reduce their distress, enhance their well-being, and engage more fully in life.
