Habit reversal training (HRT) is a behavioral treatment that has been show to effectively address a variety of body focused repetitive behaviors (BFRB) which cause high levels of distress and impact daily living. HRT has been shown to work best when used in combination of a full biopsychosocial assessment, looking at the variety of different factors that can be maintaining the behaviors. Sometimes a client and therapist will work in conjunction with a Psychiatrist who can recommend and monitor appropriate medications.

- Excessive hair pulling or Trichotillomania
- Nail Biting
- Thumb Sucking
- Skin Picking
HRT is a behavioral treatment that has 5 different behavioral components which include:
- awareness training to help identify the circumstances in which the behaviors occur
- competing response training to help the client substitute a new behavior that is not compatitible with the problem behaivor.
- contingency management
- relaxation training
- generalization training
