Habit Reversal Training

Habit reversal training (HRT) is a behavioral treatment that has been show to effectively address a variety of body focused repetitive behaviors (BFRB) which cause high levels of distress and impact daily living. Deciding to address this type of  issue can be highly stressful and it can be important to talk to a professional to help decide if it is the right time for treatment. Behaviors included are:
  • Tics
  • Excessive hair pulling or Trichotillomania
  • Nail Biting
  • Thumb Sucking
  • Skin Picking

HRT is a behavioral treatment that has 5 different behavioral components which include:
  1. awareness training to help identify the circumstances in which the behaviors occur
  2. competing response training to help the client substitute a new behavior that is not compatitible with the problem behaivor.
  3. contingency management
  4. relaxation training
  5. generalization training

HRT has been shown to work best when used in combination of a full biopsychosocial assessment, looking at the variety of different factors that can be maintaining the behaviors. Sometimes a client and therapist will work in conjunction with a Psychiatrist who can recommend and monitor appropriate medications.
