Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders (CBT-E)

Cognitive behavioral treatments for eating disorders target the relationship between the preoccupation surrounding food, weight and appearance (often the idea that one's self-worth is dependent on how much they weigh, what they eat, or how they look) and the specific behaviors that are triggered as a way to deal with the strong emotions associated with these attitudes (bingeing, purging, dietary restriction).

Treatment starts with getting to know the client and and thoroughly assessing the problem. Treatment then addresses the relationship between the harmful behaviors and the attitudes that may be reinforcing them using tools such as food monitors, and logs identifying the thoughts and feelings around eating (or not eating). Maintaining new coping strategies and preventing relapse is the final stage of treatment. There is usually intense emotion involved with changing disordered eating behavior and a strong relationship with the right therapist can be a predictor of success.

Family Based Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa: The Maudsley Method

The Maudsley method is a 3 phase, intensive outpatient treatment where parents play an active and positive role to:

1) Help restore their child’s weight to normal levels expected given their adolescent’s age and height
2) Return control over eating back to the adolescent
3) Encourage normal and healthy adolescent development

The Maudsley Approach considers the parents the best resource for successful treatment in eating disorders. This philosophy does not blame the family for the development of the eating disorder, to the contrary considers the family the best resource to help facilitate recovery. Our highly experienced team will help your family get free from the eating disorder by supporting whole family system, Additionally we will help you set up and proactively facilitate communications with your medical team.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is an adaptation of cognitive-behavioral therapy focusing on learning skills to both accept difficult emotions and to change specific undesired behaviors.  It borrows from eastern philosophy with a strong foundation in Buddhist principles. The approach targets acknowledging, validating and regulating the strong emotional reactions that people sometimes have in difficult situations. DBT has 4 areas of focus targeting skils related to:
  • Mindfulness
  • Distress Tolerance
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness

DBT has been shown to be helpful in achieving behavior change associated with many problems including, depression, eating disorders, self-harm behaviors, substance dependence, and relationship issues.
